Secure Email Gateways (SEGs)
Secure Email Gateways (SEGs) are a way of protecting your business from malicious emails and subsequent cyber fraud. They work by sitting inline on an email pathway, reaching from the sender via the public internet used, to your business email server. By doing so, they can inspect email to pick up likely malicious content, blocking it from reaching you. Essentially, SEGs filter out any malware, fraudulent content, phishing attacks or spam will be filtered out. We have produced a free video guide for you to help you: What is Phishing?
How to choose a email security solution for my business?
Not all email security solutions are equal. When choosing a solution for your business, it is important that you consider your requirements to find a solution that best fits your needs.
How to install the email security solution? For example, do you want to have an on-site solution or a cloud-based service? The type of email security solution you choose will differ depending on how you prefer it to be deployed.
Reporting and threat intelligence. Consider also whether you want reporting capabilities in order to monitor or analyse threats. Do you want to know which users are being targeted? If this is important to you, you may want to choose a system that allows you to do this.
How important is blocking spam? Not all solutions will filter out spam as well as malicious content and the like.
How effective is the software? Not only do you want to consider how effective the software is at detecting and blocking malware, but also, you may want to do your research in terms of how quickly it can respond to any emails that happen to make it through.
Response Capabilities. If an email makes it to a user’s inbox and is subsequently found to be malicious, the ability to automatically locate and remove those emails will prevent further problems.

How do Secure Email Gateways compare to other email security solutions?
Currently, Microsoft 365 users get Exchange Online Protection (EOP), a security add-on, by default. However, alone, this is insufficient due to its inability to block sophisticated attacks. SEGs, as a further add-on, can help to improve security by providing additional protection.
At MFTS, however, we favour Vade Email Security over SEGs for your Microsoft users.
Vade for Microsoft 365 is a cloud-based email security add-on. It works with EOP rather than against it, and does not require an MX record change. This low-maintenance solution is quick to deploy and easy to use.
SEGs, on the other hand require an MX record change. They sit in front of Microsoft’s architecture, which means they are not as effective at blocking an account takeover. Additionally, they cannot detect malicious insider activity once a hacker has breached a system.
